About Ujung Bocur / Karang Nyimbor

Ujung Bocur / Karang Nyimbor es un point break en la costa suroeste de Sumatra que produce rides largos y ondulantes con una forma consistente, ideal para surfistas de nivel intermedio. La ola envuelve el punto con suficiente longitud para trabajar el footwork y el trimming, y puede aguantar tamaño cuando el swell está pumping. Es un point relativamente tranquilo para los estándares de la zona de Krui, aunque el fondo de arrecife sigue exigiendo un surf consciente. El paisaje del entorno y el ambiente relajado lo convierten en un destino muy gratificante.

Hazards

La ola rompe sobre un arrecife poco profundo con coral vivo que puede provocar laceraciones serias en una caída, así que los escarpines valen la pena en mareas bajas. Una corriente de retorno moderada recorre el interior alrededor del punto — úsala para palaar hacia afuera, pero no te dejes atrapar por ella al salir. Los erizos de mar acechan en las grietas del arrecife cerca del canal de entrada, así que elige bien dónde pisas.

Getting there

Desde el pueblo de Krui, dirígete hacia el sur por la carretera costera de Pesisir Barat en dirección a Tanjung Setia y presta atención a los carteles de Ujung Bocur/Karang Nyimbor; varios pequeños guesthouses y warungs a lo largo de este tramo sirven de referencias útiles. Aparca en el arcén de la carretera y toma el corto sendero que baja a la playa — la paleada hacia afuera es más fácil por el canal en el lado norte del punto, y sales por el mismo sitio para evitar las secciones de arrecife más someras.

Board

Un thruster versátil o una mid-length de entre 6'4" y 7'0" se adapta perfectamente a las largas paredes ondulantes del point y te da el impulso necesario para enlazar secciones. Súbete a una step-up de 6'8"–7'2" cuando el swell supere la cabeza y la ola empiece a pared y a huecarse; en días pequeños y débiles, una fish o una groveller mantendrá la diversión.

Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.

✈️Getting there

Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

🛵Getting around

On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.

Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
