Hazards

Das Riff ist bei Ebbe flach – lebende Korallen und scharfe Felsen liegen direkt unter der Oberfläche, sodass Stürze zu Schnitten und Schürfwunden führen können; Reef Booties werden dringend empfohlen. Rips und Strömungen können in diesem Teil der Kleinen Sundainseln trügerisch stark sein, und die Meerenge von Alor ist bekannt für starke Gezeitenströmungen, die sich rund um den Break intensivieren können. Seeigel lauern im Riffregal in der Ein- und Ausstiegszone, also schiebe deine Füße und achte darauf, wo du deine Hände hinlegst.

Getting there

Mali ist der Hauptknotenpunkt für Alor, also fliege oder nimm die Fähre von Kupang (Westtimor) und du wirst in kurzer Entfernung zum Strand landen oder anlegen. Die Welle ist direkt vom Mali Beach aus zugänglich – paddle durch den Kanal auf der rechten Seite des Breaks, um über das Riff zu klettern. Eine Handvoll Warungs und kleiner Losmen befinden sich entlang der Strandstraße und dienen als einfache Orientierungspunkte; es gibt informelle Parkmöglichkeiten am Straßenrand in der Nähe des Strandes.

Board

Ein vielseitiges Shortboard (6'2"–6'6") oder eine Fun-Shape bewältigt die typischen Reef Break Bedingungen hier gut. An kleineren, matschigen Tagen hilft ein Fish oder Mid-Length, das Beste aus der Welle herauszuholen; ein Step-Up ist nicht notwendig, es sei denn, ein ungewöhnlich großer Swell kommt durch.

Timor sits at the far southeastern end of the Indonesian archipelago, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), sharing the island with the independent nation of Timor-Leste. For surfers, it's the gritty, frontier alternative to Bali's polish — a place where you trade comfort and crowds for empty line-ups, raw landscapes and genuine exploration.

✈️Getting there

The gateway is Kupang's El Tari Airport (KOE), with regular domestic flights from Bali (Denpasar) — around 1.5 hours — and connections via Jakarta, Surabaya and Labuan Bajo. Some smaller carriers link Kupang to the outer islands.

🛵Getting around

On Timor itself, scooter and motorbike rental is the most flexible way to reach spots like Tablolong, Oetune and Kolbano — though Kolbano is a serious drive (several hours east of Kupang). Cars with a driver are widely available in Kupang and worth it for longer hauls or if you're hauling boards and gear.

🌤️Climate & season

Timor has one of the most pronounced dry seasons in Indonesia, sitting in a rain-shadowed, savanna-like corner of NTT. The dry season runs roughly May to October — and this is also prime surf time, when consistent southeast trade winds groom the swells and rainfall is minimal.
