About Way Jambu / Sumatran Pipeline
Way Jambu, known locally as the Sumatran Pipeline, lives up to its name with thick, hollow barrels that detonate over a shallow reef. This is a serious wave built for experienced surfers who are comfortable inside heavy, fast tubes with little margin for error. On the right swell, it's one of the most exciting and punishing breaks in the Krui region, delivering world-class barrels in an otherwise quiet setting. Approach with respect — wipeouts here are no joke.
Local knowledge
The reef at Way Jambu is extremely shallow at low tide — a bad wipeout or late drop will put you straight onto sharp, live coral with serious lacerating force. The barrel is fast and thick with a quick-slamming lip, meaning hold-downs are real; getting caught inside on a set can push you over the reef multiple times. Watch for a sneaky lateral current on bigger swells that drags you toward the rocks on the north end of the break.
Krui town is the nearest hub — head south along the Pesisir Barat coastal road and look for the Way Jambu river mouth as your landmark; a small warung near the shore track confirms you're in the right place. Park roadside and it's a short walk across the beach to the channel entry on the south side of the peak — paddle out through the channel to avoid the reef, and use the same channel for your exit. No boat needed; this is a paddle-out spot.
Bring a proven shortboard with plenty of rocker and a firm, responsive template — this wave rewards a board that can handle steep, fast drops and hold in a tight barrel. Step up to a 6'4"–6'8" step-up on any swell above 6 ft; a high-performance twin-fin or fish is a liability here given the speed and power on offer.
moderate — be polite, wait your turn.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
