About Jimmy's

Jimmy's is an advanced reef break along the Krui coast that serves up powerful, quality waves for surfers who know what they're doing. The wave pitches with speed and force, offering opportunities for steep drops, barrels, and high-performance turns on the right day. It can get shallow at low tide, so reading the conditions before paddling out is essential. A relatively uncrowded spot, it rewards those willing to explore beyond the main breaks.

Local knowledge

Hazards

The reef is shallow, sharp, and unforgiving — especially at low tide when wipeouts can result in serious lacerations or worse; sea urchins are present on the reef shelf so booties are strongly recommended. A defined rip channel sits alongside the break and, while useful for paddling out, can catch the unwary off guard on bigger swells. Watch for the occasional fishing boat cutting through the channel, particularly in the early morning.

Getting there

Jimmy's sits along the Krui coastline of southwest Sumatra (Pesisir Barat regency); from Krui town head south along the coastal road and look for the well-worn track down to the beach near the local warung that marks the spot. Paddle out via the rip channel on the northern side of the break — it's the cleanest route through and keeps you clear of the impact zone. Exit through the same channel; avoid scrambling over the reef, particularly on the dropping tide.

Board

On standard 3–5 ft days a shortboard in your usual performance range handles the steep drops and powerful turns well; step up to a rounded-pin or small gun (6'4"–7'0") when the swell pushes overhead and beyond, as the wave pitches hard and speed is non-negotiable. Leave the fish at home — this is not a soft, forgiving wave on any day.

Localism

mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra

Full Sumatra surf guide →

Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.

✈️Getting there

Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

🛵Getting around

On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.

🌤️Climate & season

Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
