About Jenny's Right
Jenny's Right is a fun and accessible reef break that hands intermediates a reliable right-hander with a smooth, rideable face. The wave offers a good combination of length and shape, giving surfers plenty of room to link turns and build confidence on reef. It's generally more forgiving than the heavier breaks nearby, though reef awareness is always important. A consistent and enjoyable option when the swell is in the water.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow at low tide and lined with sharp, live coral — wipeouts can mean lacerations, so booties are strongly recommended. Sea urchins lurk in the cracks near the entry and exit zones, and a persistent rip runs along the reef's edge that can catch intermediates off-guard between sets. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and transfers to nearby breaks is an ongoing hazard, so stay alert when paddling out.
Jenny's Right is typically accessed by boat charter from the nearest coastal town or surf camp along this stretch of Sumatra's southwest coast — there is no reliable direct beach access on foot. Coordinate with your lodge or a local boat operator for drop-offs and pickups; the skipper will read the reef and time your entry to the channel on the inside edge of the break. A basic warung may be available at the departure point but bring water and snacks for the session.
A versatile shortboard in the 6'2"–6'6" range suits the wave's moderate face height and room to turn; a fun shape or mid-length works well on smaller, mushier days to keep speed through the longer sections. Step up to a slightly stiffer, higher-volume shortboard if a solid swell pushes through and the wave stands up more critically over the reef.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
