About Honey Smacks
Honey Smacks is a playful reef break with a name that hints at its character — snappy, fun waves that smack with a bit more punch than you might expect. Intermediates will enjoy its lively face and the opportunity to work on more powerful surfing without being thrown into the deep end. The wave can offer some hollow sections on the right tide and swell combination, adding variety to each session. A sweet little break that's easy to fall for.
Local knowledge
The reef is shallow and sharp in sections — a wipeout on a hollow set wave can put you uncomfortably close to live coral, so booties are strongly recommended. Watch for sea urchins along the entry and exit zones, and be aware of shifting rips that can pull you off the peak when swell picks up. Boat traffic from passing fishing vessels and local motorised canoes is a real consideration — stay aware, especially on busy days.
Honey Smacks sits off the Sumatran coast and is most cleanly accessed by boat — charter a local jukung from the nearest fishing village or jump aboard a surf charter doing a run along this stretch of coastline. The paddle from a boat anchored in the channel is short and straightforward; aim to enter and exit through the deeper water on the shoulder rather than pushing through the inside reef section. A land approach is possible with local guidance, but the boat option is cleaner and far more practical here.
Your everyday shortboard (6'0"–6'4") will serve you well across most conditions — something with a little extra volume will help you paddle into the punchier sets without burning out. On smaller, mushier days a fish or hybrid will unlock more fun from the wave; if a solid swell hits and the hollow sections start stacking up, step up an inch or two and a touch more rocker to handle the speed.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Sumatra
Full Sumatra surf guide →Sumatra is Indonesia's wild western frontier — the sixth-largest island on earth and arguably the country's deepest, most varied surf zone. Where Bali trades on crowds and nightlife, Sumatra deals in space, jungle backdrops and waves that still feel earned. The swell window here is enormous: the same Indian Ocean groundswells that light up the rest of the archipelago hit Sumatra's exposed western flank first, raw and unfiltered.
✈️Getting there
Most surf trips funnel through Padang, the launch point for the Mentawais, Telos and Banyaks. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau Airport, PDG) via Jakarta — and Jakarta connects to Bali and international hubs like Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
🛵Getting around
On the Sumatran mainland and on Nias, a scooter is the cheap, flexible standard — expect potholed roads, livestock and long, scenic distances between zones. Around Krui the coastal road links a string of spots over many kilometres, so a bike (or a hired car with driver for groups and boards) earns its keep.
🌤️Climate & season
Sumatra straddles the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round with water warm enough for boardshorts (a rashguard or 1mm top is plenty).
