About Simeulue - Tea Bags
Tea Bags is one of Simeulue's more demanding reef breaks, throwing up powerful and punchy waves that keep advanced surfers on their toes. The wave can get hollow and fast, requiring precise positioning and confident surfing to make the most of each ride. It's not a spot for the faint-hearted, but experienced surfers will be well rewarded with some of the island's most exciting surf. Check the conditions carefully and respect the reef.
Local knowledge
A shallow, live coral reef is the primary danger — wipeouts on the inside section can result in serious lacerations and reef rash, and sea urchins lurk in the crevices at low tide. The wave's fast, hollow nature means getting caught inside during sets is punishing; a strong rip along the reef edge can pull surfers into the impact zone or toward the channel. Boat traffic from charter vessels and speedboats accessing the anchorage is an additional hazard — stay aware, especially on your paddle out and during lulls.
Tea Bags is most reliably accessed by boat — either from Sinabang town or via a charter/liveaboard anchored off Simeulue's west coast, with the trip taking anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on your base. Entry is typically made by jumping off the boat into the deep-water channel beside the reef, timing it between sets; exit the same way, paddling hard for the channel to avoid being dragged across the coral shelf. There are no warungs or facilities at the break itself, so carry water, wax and a full first-aid kit including reef booties and antiseptic.
On standard 3–6 ft days bring a high-performance shortboard or a slightly fuller step-up (6'2"–6'6") that can handle the speed and provide drive through hollow sections. When it jumps above 6 ft, move up to a reliable step-up or semi-gun with enough volume to paddle into fast, heavy walls — a board that's too short or too loose will get away from you in the critical section.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Simeulue
Full Simeulue surf guide →Tucked off the northwest tip of Sumatra in the province of Aceh, Simeulue is one of Indonesia's most underrated surf islands — a low-key, jungle-fringed outpost where empty reef passes still outnumber surfers on most days. It sits in the same swell-rich corner of the Indian Ocean as the Mentawais and the Hinakos, but with a fraction of the crowds and a far easier journey than the boat-only Ments.
✈️Getting there
Getting to Simeulue is easier than most remote Sumatran surf islands. The usual route is a domestic flight from Medan (Kualanamu International Airport) on mainland Sumatra to Simeulue's airport near Sinabang, the island's main town. Flights run roughly daily on small aircraft, so even shorter trips are feasible.
🛵Getting around
Once on Simeulue, the simplest option is a scooter. Many homestays and resorts can sort a rental, and a bike gives you freedom to check different reefs and beaches at your own pace. Roads on the main routes are reasonable but expect rougher, potholed stretches and the odd river crossing once you head off the spine of the island.
🌤️Climate & season
Simeulue is tropical and warm all year, with water temperatures comfortable for boardshorts or a thin top — no wetsuit needed.
