About Ujung Genteng
Ujung Genteng is a scenic reef break tucked away on Java's far south-west coast, offering intermediate surfers a taste of real reef-riding in a remote, unspoilt setting. The waves are generally moderate in size and provide good walls for building speed and practising manoeuvres. Turtle nesting beaches nearby add to the appeal of making the long journey out here. Crowds are rare, making it a rewarding escape for surfers seeking something off the beaten track.
Local knowledge
The reef here is shallow at low tide — sharp coral and sea urchins lurk just below the surface, so a wipeout at the wrong moment can mean a nasty raking. A persistent south-swell rip runs along the reef edge and can push you off the peak quickly if you're not reading the water; always spot your exit before paddling out. Jellyfish are seasonally present inshore, and the remoteness of the location means medical help is a long way off, so err on the side of caution.
Ujung Genteng sits at the southern tip of West Java's Sukabumi regency — the drive from Pelabuhan Ratu (the nearest sizeable town) takes roughly 3–4 hours on winding inland roads, so an early start or an overnight stop in the village is strongly advised. Park near the beachside warungs in the main village area and walk the short track down to the beach; paddle straight out through the channel on the right-hand side of the reef to avoid the shallows on the inside. Exit the same channel — don't try to come in over the dry reef.
A versatile shortboard (6'2"–6'6") with a bit of volume handles the everyday moderate-sized walls well and gives you enough drive to make sections on the longer rides. Bring a small-wave fish or hybrid for the flatter, mushier days that are common outside peak swell season; a step-up is worth having in your quiver if south swells are pumping on arrival.
mellow — relaxed vibe.

Surfing in Java
Full Java surf guide →Java is Indonesia's most populous and culturally dense island, yet for surfers it remains one of the archipelago's great escapes. Overshadowed by Bali to the east and the Mentawai boats to the west, Java's long, exposed south coast quietly serves up world-class waves with a fraction of the crowds.
✈️Getting there
Most international surfers fly into Bali (Denpasar/DPS) or Jakarta (CGK). For G-Land, the classic route is from Bali: drive west to Gilimanuk, take the short ferry across to Ketapang/Banyuwangi in East Java, then continue overland and by boat into Alas Purwo National Park. Many surfers simply book a transfer or surf-camp package from Bali, which can run as a long road-and-ferry day or a faster speedboat charter across the strait.
🛵Getting around
Java is huge and its south-coast surf zones are spread far apart, so there's no single hub. Scooters are cheap and easy to rent in beach towns like Batu Karas and Pangandaran and are perfect for short hops to local breaks — but Javanese traffic and long-haul roads can be intense for the inexperienced.
🌤️Climate & season
Java has a tropical climate with two clear seasons. The dry season runs roughly May to September and is prime surf time — consistent Indian Ocean groundswell, lighter and more favourable winds, and the cleaner conditions that make G-Land fire. This is when the south coast is at its best.
